It was founded in 1914 as the Moorland Library and became a research center within Howard University in 1973, consisting of the University Archives Division, the Manuscripts Division, Library, Museum, and the Black Press Archive. In addition to its paper-based collections, the Archives has an active oral history program, and houses a growing digital collection of interviews of alumni, former deans and faculty, and civil rights activists. His research focus is on African American history and the African diaspora, with interest in the impact of Black scientists on the Black experience; the ramification of bills that outlaw critical race theory; and unique cultural areas such as hip hop and other urbanized outlets as a form of oral history internationally (he has found links between what hes studying in class and what artists such as Kasim, Eleven9, Zeddy, are providing as historical narrative). The resources of the Manuscript Division consists of four departments Manuscripts, Prints and Photographs, Oral History, and Music the collections of primary source materials of the Manuscript Division complement the resources of the Library Division and broaden the scope of areas for research on the global Black experience.
